The story behind Ourbis

Some history (why)

Ourbis started in November of 2006, when we decided that local businesses deserved to be better advertised. There was no alternative behind inefficient, paid-for ads, that usually did not serve small businesses well.

In a world where everything gets more global, we thought that local businesses mattered, and started thinking about a way to promote them. An open, community oriented website, was our response.

How we did it

Ourbis is a web application developed using the great Ruby on Rails framework. It runs on top of a powerful PostgreSQL database, and on a rock-solid Linux Debian system.

We also use Ferret, a flexible and powerful indexing engine.

Finally we used graphic sugar from the FamFamFam Silk icon set and borrowed elements of Juliane Krug's People work.
